The One Potent Ingredient to Double Your Blueberry Harvest

How to Apply Elemental Sulfur for Maximum Results

Using elemental sulfur is a straightforward, homemade process, but it requires the right timing and method. Because it relies on soil bacteria to work, it is not an overnight chemical fix. Here is exactly how to use it in your backyard:

  • Step 1: Test Your Starting pH. Do not guess your soil’s current acidity. Buy a simple, cheap soil pH test kit from the garden store. You need to know your starting number to understand exactly how much sulfur the package recommends you apply.
  • Step 2: Time the Application. The absolute best time to apply elemental sulfur is up to a year before you even put a new blueberry bush in the ground. This gives the soil microbes plenty of time to convert the mineral and create the perfect acidic home.
  • Step 3: Top Dress Existing Bushes. If your bushes are already planted and struggling, you can still save them. Measure out the amount of pellet sulfur recommended on the bag for your specific pH drop. Sprinkle the granules in a wide ring directly onto the dirt around the base of the bush.
  • Step 4: Keep a Safe Distance. When making your ring of sulfur, leave a gap of two to three inches away from the main woody stems of the bush. You want the mineral over the spreading root zone, not piled directly against the trunk.
  • Step 5: Scratch It In. Use a hand trowel or a small rake to gently scratch the yellow pellets into the top inch of the soil. Blueberry roots are very shallow, so do not dig deep. You just want the sulfur making contact with the moist earth, rather than sitting completely exposed on top.
  • Step 6: Water Thoroughly. Give the area a good, deep watering. Consistent moisture is required for the soil bacteria to wake up, stay active, and start breaking down the sulfur into your soil.

Patience Pays Off

Once you apply elemental sulfur, the physical work is done. It will take several months for the pH to drop. However, once the soil unlocks, the transformation is massive. The leaves will turn a deep, healthy green, the bush will finally put on vigorous new growth, and when the blooming season arrives, you will see a drastic increase in the size, health, and volume of your blueberry harvest.
