The X-ray image above shows an extreme case of chronic constipation in a young woman who suffered from persistent digestive symptoms for a long period of time. After more than two weeks of continuous pain, bloating, and inability to pass stool normally, she finally went for a medical examination. The abdominal X-ray revealed a massively enlarged colon filled with trapped stool and gas.
What many people think of as “just constipation” can sometimes become a dangerous and potentially life-threatening condition when left untreated for too long.
What Happens During Chronic Constipation?
Under normal conditions, food moves through the digestive tract until waste reaches the colon, where water is absorbed before the stool is eliminated from the body.
However, during chronic constipation:
- Stool remains inside the colon for too long.
- More water is absorbed from the waste.
- The stool becomes extremely hard and dry.
- The colon begins to stretch and expand.
- Bowel movements become slower and more difficult.
In severe cases like this one, the condition may lead to:
- Extreme abdominal swelling
- Severe pain and cramping
- Nausea and vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Difficulty breathing due to pressure inside the abdomen
- Bowel obstruction
- Dangerous enlargement of the colon
Doctors may refer to these conditions as:
- Fecal Impaction — severe buildup of hardened stool
- Megacolon — abnormal enlargement of the colon
Why Is This Condition Dangerous?
Severe chronic constipation can lead to serious complications, including:
1. Intestinal Blockage
The colon can become so packed with stool that normal passage through the intestines becomes impossible.
2. Enlarged Colon (Megacolon)
The colon may stretch beyond its normal size and lose its ability to function properly.
3. Colon Perforation
In extreme situations, pressure inside the intestines may cause tearing or rupture of the bowel wall.
4. Infection and Sepsis
A perforation can allow bacteria to spread into the abdomen and bloodstream, creating a life-threatening emergency.
