Let me tell you about the first time I saw yellow stuff dripping down my bathroom walls.

I was in my late twenties, and I was  cleaning my  bathroom. I noticed a yellow, sticky substance dripping down the walls. I was disgusted. I didn’t know what it was.

I did some research, and I learned that it could be several things.

The Most Likely Culprits
1. Nicotine Stains

What it is. A sticky yellow residue from cigarette smoke.

How it forms. Nicotine and tar from cigarette smoke condense on the walls.

Appearance. Yellow or brownish in color.

Smell. It has a distinct smell.

Location. Often in the bathroom or other rooms where people smoke.

Clean-up. Use a heavy-duty cleaner.

2. Surfactant Leaching
What it is. A phenomenon where surfactants in paint leach to the surface.

How it forms. Surfactants migrate to the surface of the paint.

Appearance. Yellow, brown, or sticky.

Location. Often in  bathrooms and kitchens.

Cause. High humidity or moisture.

Clean-up. Wipe with a damp cloth.

3. Dust and Grime
What it is. A buildup of dust and grime.

How it forms. Dust and grime accumulate over time.

Appearance. Yellowish or brownish.

Location. Anywhere in the house.

Cause. Lack of  cleaning.

Clean-up. Use a general-purpose  cleaner.

4. Rust
What it is. Rust from metal fixtures.

How it forms. Rust can drip down from metal fixtures.

Appearance. Orange or brown.

Location. Often near metal fixtures.

Cause. Water and metal.

Clean-up. Remove the rust and repair the fixture.

5. Mold or Mildew
What it is. Mold or mildew growth.

How it forms. Mold and mildew thrive in damp environments.

Appearance. Yellow, green, or black.
