Gallstones: what are they and how to get rid of them?

A whitish lump, an unpleasant odor… These could be tonsil stones, responsible for persistent bad breath, but easy to prevent.

A strange sensation in your throat, a small whitish lump… and, above all, an unpleasant odor that’s hard to ignore. If this has ever happened to you, you’re not alone. Behind this relatively unknown phenomenon lies a reality more common than you might think. But what exactly is it? And, most importantly, how can you prevent it from happening again?

These small balls have a specific name.

These small deposits are called tonsil stones.

They form in the small, natural cavities of the tonsils, called crypts. These folds can retain:

  • food waste
  • dead cells
  • microorganisms

Over time, all of this compacts and hardens, forming those small balls that are sometimes visible.

Why do they appear?

Contrary to what one might think, this phenomenon is not necessarily linked to a lack of hygiene.

Several factors can contribute to its appearance:

  • A particular anatomy (deeper crypts)
  • Accumulation of residue in the throat
  • Recurrent episodes of otolaryngology
  • A drier mouth

Some people are simply more prone to it than others.

The unmistakable sign

The most common symptom is…  persistent bad breath  .

Even with regular brushing, this odor can persist, as it originates directly in the throat.

Other symptoms may appear:

  • feeling of discomfort
  • foreign body sensation
  • mild irritation

But in most cases, it remains benign.

How to remove them gently?

Good news: they often disappear naturally.

To help your body eliminate them:

  • Gargle with warm salt water.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Use a mild mouthwash.
  • Maintain complete oral hygiene (teeth and tongue).

Some people also use an oral irrigator to gently clean the area.

Mistakes that must be avoided at all costs
