The food in your image is cassava (also called yuca or manioc). You may have seen claims that it’s the “world’s deadliest food.” That statement is partly true—but very misleading.
🌿 What is cassava?
Cassava is a starchy root vegetable eaten by hundreds of millions of people worldwide, especially in Africa, South America, and Asia. It’s a major source of calories because it grows easily—even in poor soil and drought.
⚠️ Why can it be dangerous?
Cassava naturally contains chemicals called cyanogenic compounds.
If the root is:
- eaten raw, or
- not prepared properly
these compounds can turn into cyanide, a toxic substance.
👉 That’s where the danger comes from.
