Lice, eczema, and other medical causes
An article published by Harvard Health Publishing also lists several other conditions that may cause scalp itching, including:
Atopic dermatitis (eczema)
Fungal infections
Head lice
Hives (urticaria), which can be triggered by food, medications, or sweating
If itching is caused by one of these conditions, medical treatment and prescription products are often necessary.
Environmental factors: pollution, weather, and stress
Environmental and lifestyle factors can also contribute to scalp irritation. Air pollution, dry or cold weather, and stress are known to worsen inflammation and increase itching.
If scalp itching persists for more than a week, becomes severe, or is accompanied by symptoms such as hair loss, sores, or a rash, Dr. Chacon recommends consulting a dermatologist. A specialist can make an accurate diagnosis and prescribe targeted treatments or medicated shampoos to soothe the scalp and address the underlying cause.
