Contact dermatitis
Dr. Chacon also highlights contact dermatitis, which results from an allergic reaction or irritation caused by hair products such as shampoos, conditioners, or hair dyes.
She advises paying close attention to product labels and watching for ingredients that commonly trigger irritation, including:
Sulfates
Parabens
Alcohol
Fragrances
Synthetic dyes
“These substances can cause itching, especially in people with sensitive skin or existing scalp conditions,” she explains.
For those at risk, Dr. Chacon recommends choosing products labeled hypoallergenic, for sensitive skin, or all-natural. She also suggests doing a patch test before using a new product: apply a small amount to the inside of your forearm and wait 24 hours. If itching or irritation occurs, avoid using the product on your scalp.
